What is a high card in poker?

A high card hand ranks last on the poker hand rankings list. This hand does not form any combination of five cards and is therefore ranked based on the highest card among the five different cards. All five cards in this hand are of different rank and suit and are not capable of forming any possible union that is why they are least valued in poker. If unluckily you get the high card hand, then there are minimal chances of making it to the showdown and the pot finally.

  • This hand forms no combination of five cards which means all the cards differ in rank and suit.
  • The rank of this hand is evaluated first by the rank of its highest card.
  • In case of a tie at the showdown, when the rank of the highest card is the same, then the rank of the second-highest card is compared, if the third card is also the same, then the fourth card breaks the tie, and finally, if the fourth card is also of the equal rank, then the fifth card decides the winner of the pot.
  • Suits are irrelevant in this type of hand which means a high card of any suit can be considered as the highest card of the hand.
  • An Ace is the highest card a player can have.
